International Affairs Manager, AFID
The Ceylon Association for the Mentally Retarded (CAMR) proudly announces the hosting of the 22nd Asian Conference on Intellectual Disabilities, to be held from 3rd to 7th of October 2015 in the capital of Sri Lanka. As President of the Executive Board of AFID and on behalf of CAMR, I welcome each of you to this special event. It is an exciting time for all those who support the welfare of people with intellectual disabilities in Asia.
We have continued to grow and adapt with high motivation and responsiveness to new ideas. During a time of extensive nation-wide and global change, our organization is also facing many challenges and we are endeavoring to meet them with determination.
The world of intellectual disabilities is an exciting area in which to work/study/play, and we continue to bring inspired people together in conferences like this to work in these areas, to ensure that our organization remains at the cutting edge of knowledge.
As all of you would know, ID persons are very much marginalized in our societies. To highlight this situation, we have selected the theme for the conference as “A place for me under the sun”.
The 12th ACMR was held successfully in Sri Lanka in 1995. Twenty years later the Executive Committee of CAMR is privileged to invite all of you once again to Sri Lanka. As South Asian countries we share many commonalities of culture and tradition. This conference will provide an opportunity to other Asian countries to share these South Asian perspectives on disabilities by establishing a platform for future collaborations.
During this conference, expertise on ID is brought to this gathering. With the participation of organization leaders with vision, knowledge, wherewithal and the experience, it is expected this conference will help pave the way for the future of ID persons. As participants of this conference, you are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. I hope you will stay engaged and be proactive throughout the conference and help to better the future of ID persons. We invite your active participation in the 22nd Asian Conference on Intellectual Disabilities and welcome you cordially once again.
Mrs. Nandhini Wijayaratnam
President, AFID 2014/15
