#DrawDisability is a global art project that aims to encourage dialogue on disability and related issues amongst students and teachers worldwide.

Students aged 6-11 and 12-17 years old with and without disabilities are encourage to #Drawdisability

Teachers will be provided with guidelines and will be invited to promote awareness on disability within the classroom. They will be asked to:

  • Explore the definition of disability and several important issues related to disability
  • Present a set of activities for the students to educate them about disability. The students will also be invited to share their understanding of disability by drawing how they see persons with disability in their communities.

The best drawings will be shown during the World Education Forum in Incheon, Republic of Korea and during the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD in New York.

In principle all children have the same right to education. In practice, too often, children with disability still face forms of discrimination or exclusion. Children with disability are more likely to be excluded from their rightful access to quality education.

One way of bringing this perspective forward is to raise awareness by actively involving the school community using a creative form of expression, that is, the art of drawing.

If children and youth are informed and motivated about the issue of disability, their perceptions and actions can change the lives of millions, most importantly of those with disabilities around the world, by challenging stereotypes and attitudes. Art is a narrative tool for social change.

The #DrawDisability campaign was launched on December 3rd  2014 (International Day for Persons with Disability)

Teachers and Schools working with children must be contacted as soon as possible to encourage their participation and implementation in the classroom.

Early submissions of the drawings by April 1, 2015 are highly encouraged as selected drawings will be showcased at the World Education Forum in May 2015 in Incheon, South Korea, and the

Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP-CRPD) in June 2015 New York, USA.

The deadline for all submissions will be July 15, 2015 after which date, the general public will be invited to vote their favourite drawings on-line. The 60 most voted drawings by the public will be shortlisted and a designated jury will then select the 30 best drawings based on:

  • Message/Disability relevance (40%)
  • Creativity (30%)
  • Technique (20%)
  • Overall impact (10%)

The final selection of 30 artworks will be exhibited on the side-lines of the 70th United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.
